This linked article from The Atlantic will catch you up with David Rumsey, who has created the the most incredible collection of geocoded maps that you can imagine. I use them extensively in my research. Open up this map of Germany in 1893 and see how beautifully detailed they are. I have found the Rumsey maps incredibly useful for recreating village boundaries.
